Seydina Mouhamadou Lamine Laye is the son of Seydina Ababacar Laye and Sokhna Fatou Lo Diop. He was born in Yoff in 1958, under the leadership of Seydina Mandione Laye. He is part of the first generation of grandsons of Imam Mahdi. His revered father, Seydina Ababacar Laye, is the third son of Seydina Limamou Lahi Al Mahdi (peace and blessings be upon him) and the grandson of Thierno Mbaye SYLLA, who served for 22 years as an imam at the Dakar mosque and as a judge at the Muslim tribunal.
His holy mother Sokhna Fatou Diop Laye is the daughter of Mame Babacar Diop, a veteran who fought in the First World War, and was later promoted to the rank of the first regular Imam of the Yoff mosque by Seydina Issa Rouhou Lahi (peace be upon him).
Seydina Mouhamadou Lamine Laye lost his father very early, who passed away in 1966. He was only eight years old at the time. Thus, in the absence of his father, he had a difficult childhood with his brothers, all very young, under the care of his older brother Mouhamadou Bachir Laye, the eldest of the siblings. He began his Quranic studies before later being introduced to the French school system. In the early 1980s, driven by the pursuit of knowledge, he traveled to Morocco to further enhance his religious and intellectual understanding.
An experienced speaker, Seydina Mouhamadou Lamine Laye began to make a name for himself under the caliphate of Seydina Mame Alassane Laye, who did not hesitate to occasionally send him to lead religious programs. This was the case in 1996, when he was appointed to preside over the pilgrimage festivities in Gorée, marking the three-month stay of Imam Mahdi on the martyred island. As part of promoting and popularizing his grandfather’s message, he also launched a series of audio cassettes in which he delivered profound religious talks, aiming to advance the prophetic missions of Seydina Limamou Lahi and Seydina Issa Rouhou Lahi (peace be upon him). This initiative met with great popular success and helped increase his recognition among the Layene community and well beyond.
His time at the French school benefited him greatly, and allowed him to bring a fresh approach to defending his grandfather’s call. He studied the Bible, and did not hesitate in his talks to draw arguments from it that confirm the truth of the prophetic co-mission of Imam Mahdi, and of the Messiah Seydina Issa Rohou Lahi.
It was based on this vision that he himself had organized a centralized collection of Zakat and directly supervised its fair distribution to those entitled to it. His immediate successors, in keeping with his path, continued this work with the same rigor. Today, as our community continues to grow and develop within a changing socio-economic context, he considers it his duty to perpetuate this prophetic tradition, ensuring that the collection of Zakat is carried out in accordance with the teachings of Islam and the Sunnah, in a spirit of solidarity, justice, and organization.
The sociodemographic data collected will also make it possible to identify and locate the members of the Layene community throughout the national territory. They will be essential for the proper functioning of the community Zakat system, as they will allow the technical committee set up for this purpose to:
The caliph thus intends to make zakat a powerful financial lever that will make the community autonomous and sovereign. He has renewed his trust in his younger brother Seydi Mame Libasse Laye, who had already been entrusted with management by the previous caliph Seydina Mouhamadou Makhtar Laye.
Tracing the journey of Seydina Mouhamadou Lamine Laye, today the General Khalif of the Layènes, reveals the figure of a man steeped in faith, wisdom, and commitment to his community. Heir to a noble lineage and custodian of a sacred spiritual mission, he embodies with humility and determination the continuity of the call of Seydina Limamou Lahi Al Mahdi (saws).
May the Almighty grant him health, longevity, strength, and inspiration, so that he may fully accomplish his mission in service of the Islamic Ummah, the people of Senegal, and the Layène brotherhood.
May Allah strengthen his steps, illuminate his decisions, and grant him the support of men and hearts on the path of justice, peace, and truth.
The new Khalife, or this Guardian of Hope, fervent Artisan of the Future
He steps into the light of destiny, carried by the heritage of a centuries-old faith and the living breath of a people seeking guidance. The new Khalife general of the Layènes of Yoff embodies far more than a name or a lineage: he embodies renewed hope, a spiritual strength called to guide consciences towards peace, dignity, and transcendence.
His gaze, full of wisdom, rests on a world in flux, where bearings waver, yet where the need for a beacon remains. Through him, it is an entire youth seeking to reconnect with the essential, with truth, with a word of light amid the tumult of daily life.
He does not speak only to his community; he speaks to the Nation. He reminds us that faith is not withdrawal, but elevation; that tradition is not stagnation, but anchoring; that spirituality is a path to the future when the heart guides the steps.
Under his Khalifat, the future is shaped in the continuity of the message of Seydina Limamou Laye (peace be upon him) — a message of universal peace, unity among souls, and social justice based on divine brotherhood.
The New General Khalife of the Layènes of Yoff: A New Spiritual Chapter Begins
The Layène community, firmly rooted in the religious and cultural history of Senegal, welcomes the advent of its new General Khalife, Serigne Mouhamadou Makhtar Laye (name to be adapted to the actual case), appointed to continue the work of his illustrious predecessor and guide the faithful along the path laid out by Seydina Limamou Laye (peace be upon him).
Heir to a long tradition of spirituality, peace, and service to the community, the new Khalife continues the message of unity, brotherhood, and justice. In Yoff, the historical birthplace of Layénism, the faithful flock to express their attachment to this religious authority and reaffirm their commitment to the values of the brotherhood.
